Being faithful begins in your heart. How many times have you almost acted on something, but held back because you knew that it’d hurt someone you love?
That’s what our relationship with God is like. We get tempted to say, do, or entertain certain things, but we hold back because we know it’ll hurt His heart. Faithfulness protects your love when you choose to avoid destruction to preserve connection.
Did you catch that?
Faithfulness protects your love when you choose to avoid destruction to preserve connection.
Avoiding destruction takes wisdom and intention, and the Bible is brimming with both.
I read a chapter of Proverbs nearly every day to help me think and see like Jesus, and sometimes, words just hit me differently.
Take Proverbs 5, for example. It talks about wisdom, adultery, and marriage. I’m not married yet, so I didn’t really think it applied to me.
But then I realised that I am married to Jesus, and that changed everything. I saw some truths that apply to all of us, and I’d like to share them with you today.
7 Truths to Protect Your Love
1. Paying attention to wisdom preserves your life and purity (Proverbs 5:1-2).
2. Adultery and prostitution are enticing, but they lead to death (Proverbs 5: 3-14, 21-23).
3. Seduction is outwardly beautiful and physically exciting, but it only devours and destroys all its prey (Proverbs 5:3-6).
4. Prostitution destroys your wealth, health, and soul (Proverbs 5:8-14).
5. Faithfulness in marriage keeps your love sweet and satisfying. You don’t need novelty and perversion when your love is deep, strong, and rooted in Christ (Proverbs 5:15-19, 1-2).
6. The Bible takes sexual love very seriously because God takes it seriously. My body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, and it is not my own to yield to sexual immorality (Proverbs 5:15-19; 1 Corinthians 6:13-20).
7. True wisdom leads to holiness, and there can be no tolerance for seduction, adultery, or prostitution when I embrace the truth of God’s Word (Proverbs 5:1-2, 7-8, 15-19).
Spiritual prostitution (idolatry) is just as dangerous as physical prostitution. Adultery breaks God’s heart and estranges us from Him (see Hosea 1 and 2).
The Lord calls His people to faithfulness because the beauty of His love is revealed when we are obedient and faithful to Him. His covenant promises reside in the realm of faithfulness. He longs to fulfil His promises to us and pour out rivers of His goodness, but we must be faithful to Him first. Our hearts need to be true to Him.
Faithfulness protects your love because it keeps your heart pure and open to the Lord. It keeps your heart beautiful to Him. The Lord loves you, and there are few things that move Him as much as you loving Him back with all your heart.
Being faithful begins in your heart. Every day you have the opportunity to live from that pure place when you keep the Word in your heart and “pay attention to [its] wisdom” (Proverbs 5:1 NKJV).
A faithful heart is a beautiful one.
Let your heart be beautiful today.
