Do you miss countless hours of practice because you don’t know how to write even when you’re not inspired?
Do you wish you had a bulletproof process that revved you up to conquer the blank page each day?
You can’t grow deep roots in your craft or soar on massive wings unless you do the work even when your mind tries to trick you into stasis.
I used to wait for inspiration too. I had a spotty writing routine and fell off the wagon again and again because I didn’t feel inspired or in the mood to push myself when I got lazy.
I couldn’t really grow my skills or transform my attitude because I always had an excuse for every writing session I missed or abandoned halfway. I was a hot mess!
But one day I read that real pros write anyway even when they don’t feel inspired, and it hit me between the eyes like bush lightning because I realised that I couldn’t write like a pro and reap the benefits until I switched my mindset and showed up anyway, day in, day out.
I couldn’t be a professional blogger and copywriter until I got my act together and stopped waiting to be in the mood before I did the work I said I was gonna do.
Writing like a pro isn’t about spitting fire every day, but creating the conditions to spit fire every day. You show up, you prime the pump, and you go hard to break your barriers so you stop holding yourself back.
It’s about prepping yourself to have something to say in every session so you grow a luxuriant writing practice and do your best work as often as possible.
Writing like a pro means you read the thoughtful, articulate content that stretches you, watch the talks and documentaries that challenge you, and listen to the podcasts and masterclasses that demand your best.
It means you write down your opinions on what you consume and challenge yourself to apply as much of it as you can. It means you push yourself to transcend your limitations and smash your limits. It means you commit to skin in the game and go another round even when you feel like you can’t focus another minute.
It gets intense. It’s a challenge. You battle boredom, apathy, and laziness. You fight to stay hyped day after day after day, and you fight to keep your pen moving when your smartphone’s cooing its siren song and your eyes are itching to “just take a quick peek.”
But the pros don’t make excuses. They don’t lie to themselves about their priorities and what they make time and space for. They don’t let their feelings stop them from writing, creating, and making new things on their own schedule, crushing their goals, and growing in leaps and bounds.
Inspiration’s fun when it comes, but you can’t depend on it to come every day, so what do you do?
You flex your genius so you always have fuel for your fire, and you do it with your rock star playbook.
Write down all the ideas that fascinate you, thrill you, or challenge you. List every project you’d take on if you had the time, energy, and resources. List all the things you want to make or contribute to. Throw it all in a notebook and add to it whenever something fresh and cool sparks your interest.
When you sit to write and your pen feels bone dry, flip open your playbook and pick something to explore.
It might take you a while to get into it, but just writing out the idea or project to expand unleashes your creative expression and lights your fire. Even if you start with one thing and continue with another, you’re still making progress and flexing your genius to stay engaged and productive.
When you learn to write even when you’re not inspired, you discover what you’re capable of when you don’t feel like you’re in the mood or you have anything to say.
You learn to switch your mindset and make the most of what’s available to you at any given moment. You go beyond your emotions and live out your decision to grow a robust writing habit that showers your daily life with diamonds and pearls.
You don’t write a bestseller without a bulletproof process. You don’t become phenomenal without training long and hard to live and create on your leading edge. You don’t get the gold unless you dig through the rock first.
It’s simple, not easy. Anybody can write in spasmodic bursts of brilliance, but how many are willing to train every single day to be brilliant on call? How many are willing to divorce their excuses and just do the work to become better, brighter, sharper?
Only the dedicated ever make it that far. Only the committed reap the rewards. And only the strong know the joy of defeating their obstacles no matter what.
You can write like a pro even when you’re not inspired, but it’ll cost you.
It’ll cost you “I just can’t do it today.”
It’ll cost you “I don’t have the time now; I’ll do it tomorrow.”
It’ll cost you “I can’t do any better and might as well give up now.”
It’ll cost you “I’m too tired to think so I’ll just watch TV instead.”
It’ll cost you.
Are you willing to pay the price to live your dreams every day?
Yes you are. Yes you can.
Let’s get it.
