In John 15:1-8, we see a beautiful picture of Jesus as our Vine and Source of life. He tells us that we’re only fruitful in relationship with Him so that we abide in Him and don’t fall away (John 15:4-5).
Fruitfulness stems from relationship, from intimacy, from closeness. We don’t bear good fruit because we work ourselves to the bone or beat ourselves up for what we haven’t done yet. We bear good fruit because we stay close to Jesus, we stay in love with Him, and we surrender all to Him.
That looks like feeding on His Word, allowing Holy Spirit to direct us in prayer, and laying all our burdens down so we can rest and be free to run our race unhindered.
It looks like allowing His Word to wash us, to heal us, and to instruct us. It looks like living the way He wants us to live, not living in our flesh or our past wounds.
Fruit comes from fellowship because it comes from the Lord through us; it doesn’t come from us. That means we can’t force ourselves to be more loving, tender, or generous, but we can allow His love, tenderness, and generosity to flow through us.
When we do this, we bear abundant fruit for the Father’s glory, and that fruit is excellent because it’s Spirit-filled, not flesh-filled (John 15:8; Galatians 5:22-23).
But for this fruit to grow, we have to allow the Father to prune us (John 15:2). We have to let Him cut out the things not pleasing to Him, and it’ll hurt, but it’s worth it. It’s worth it because we discover Him as our Father, our Friend, and our Strength.
He gives us strength to overcome what we never could on our own, because He develops us to withstand what we never could on our own. He develops us so we can stay in His will, stay in our purpose, and stay close to Him for His glory.
Everything that the Father allows is for His glory, even when it’s painful or confusing in the moment.
So, be encouraged today. Be encouraged to press into His presence and dig into His Word. Be encouraged to seek His face, to love on Him, to worship Him and trust in Him even when you’re in the middle of the storm for weeks on end.
Allow the truth of His Word to fill your heart and impart life, strength, and fruitfulness into you (John 15:7).
Allow your fruit to be the result of your love relationship with Him, not your frenzied attempt to prove something to yourself or to anyone else.
Let His love, His Word, and His Spirit fill you to full and overflowing. And allow His fruit to grow in you in His timing, in Jesus’s Name. Amen.
